Angmar was a dark and fearsome realm founded in the far north of Middle-earth, beyond the Misty Mountains. Known in ancient tongues as the Iron Home, it rose to power under the rule of a mysterious and terrible lord—later revealed to be the Lord of the Nazgûl himself, remembered in history as the Witch-king of Angmar. Its dread capital was Carn Dûm, a fortress of shadow and command from which Angmar’s power spread across the northern lands.
Around Third Age 1300, the shadow of Sauron began to emerge. Evil creatures multiplied, and the Nazgûl came forth. The first among them the Witch King, established Angmar as weapon rather than a kingdom. Its location—between the Ettenmoors and the Mountains of Angmar, spanned both sides of the Misty Mountains.
The Witch-king’s aim was nothing less than the destruction of the Dúnedain of the North. At the time, their strength was divided among the splintered realms of Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur, weakened by disunity and internal strife. From Angmar, the Witch-king exploited these divisions with ruthless patience.
He gathered to his banner hosts of evil Men, Orcs, and other fell creatures, forging Angmar into a bastion of terror and war. Though feared as the Witch-king of Angmar, his true nature as the lord of the Nazgûl remained hidden for many years—until the ruin he wrought upon the North could no longer be ignored.
Angmar would become synonymous with dread, betrayal, and slow, relentless destruction—a kingdom built not to endure, but to annihilate.
